BS 8644–1:2022 will help to ensure that all fire safety data is captured and stored accurately, consistently and in a timely manner.
Digital technologies are increasingly being used to capture, store and share information about fire safety in buildings. In many cases, this is to improve the quality, accuracy and consistency of the information, or to make it easier to access and manage.
The standard provides guidance on the design, construction, handover, asset management and emergency response aspects of digital management of fire safety information. BS 8644–1:2022 is published by BSI, the national standards body for the UK.
The ability to coordinate and manage relevant fire safety information throughout the life cycle of an asset has long been an issue. This was particularly highlighted in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy in June 2017.
Following her review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, Dame Judith Hackitt recommended that duty holders of higher risk buildings should be required to develop and maintain a golden thread of information, which should be managed digitally by default.
BS 8644-1 is a new British Standard that gives recommendations and guidance to manage fire safety information digitally throughout the life cycle of an asset. It sets out processes to achieve this for all parties responsible for fire safety. The standard has been developed to ‘bridge the gap’ between the fire safety and information management sectors.
